Book review: Your Management Sucks

August 22, 2020

I do not entirely agree with Bill Watterson. He said that weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless. I think the weekend is the best time to feed ourselves.

I just finished the book “Your Management Sucks” written by Mark Stevens. He was the President of Mark Stevens & Company, Inc. His company provided high-level marketing strategies and developed marketing communication tools for such industry leaders as American Express, Smith Barney, Charles Schwab, and IBM.

This book is all about the art of leadership both in personal life and career. I loved the idea of how Steven explained that everyone has a philosophy of life, and almost everyone has a different philosophy. Our perception, our philosophy has a significant impact on our art of leadership. In the very first chapter, he talked about how we can unleash the power of personal philosophy.

Then he challenged our conventional wisdom of leadership. OMG, how bold he was there! I found 3-4 traditional wisdom in my leadership (art) and going to change those ASAP as I’ve convinced with the points Steven brought on the table.

In the third chapter, the author brought a mirror in front of me to see myself as a leader. I would say this chapter is an acid test for leaders which he called “Take a good look in the mirror, do you see a leader?”

Immediately after this acid test, I’ve found another chapter titled “Develop your personal killer app”—just a few guidelines to build a leader’s art of leadership.

And then, the great chapter “Unleash your manhattan project” came. This chapter is all about as a leader how we could lead our team irrespective of time, weekends and work-life balance towards accomplishing a goal which will have a significant impact on business.

In chapter six “Capturing ideas with a butterfly net” had a great message and which is don’t impress by all ‘sounds great’ ideas. Instead, try to see both sides of the coin. Don’t just get excited by the Excell sheet!

I’ve found a new equation of customer relationship management in chapter 7, which is CAM model. C+A+M model/equation stands for Capturing, amplifying, and maintaining the relationship with customers. All the elements are very known to us, I know but, the C+A+M equation is so new to us, I know that too!

And the last chapter, titled “The journey within” is about to declare a constructive war on yourself, I mean myself! War on conventional wisdom, wrong perception, and the art of traditional leadership, especially in execution.

What a fantastic combination of phenomena, philosophy, wrong perceptions, experiences, and a particular to-do list for leaders Mark Stevens brought to this 300-page book, impressive!
